CHICAGO OKINAWA KENJINKAI
MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
We invite everyone to join the active membership of the Chicago Okinawa Kenjinkai. All are welcome but especially those who have an interest in Okinawan culture and traditions. Ethnicity doesn't matter to us as long as you offer your friendship to our cause which is to promote interest in the culture and customs of the uchinanchu people in the Chicagoland area.
Some of the advantages of membership in the Okinawa Kenjinkai are:
-
Our annual New Years Party which takes place each spring and our Okinawan Picnic which takes place in late summer. Both of these events are pot luck events where members bring traditional foods as well as American favorites. Members are free to these two events and guests are $10.00.
-
As a member you can also partake in the free lessons or very low cost lessons. Lessons are offered in:
-
Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate. (Small fee to cover the cost of the practice Dojo)
-
Sanshin (A three stringed Lute which is a traditional instrament in Okinawa).
-
Matsuri Daiko where you learn Okinawan Eisa Drumming used at festival time.
-
If you join our Okinawa performing group you may also perform with us at one of several cultural events held throughout the year.
-
Each year we accept applications from high school graduates or college under grads for a $1000 college scholarship. The scholar ship is available to any member in good standing who has a family member who fits into one of these two categories. Details are located on our scholarship page if this interests you.
-
Our members are also given a membership directory each year to promote networking through our membership. Inclusion on this list is strictly voluntary as we respect the privacy of our members should they decline to be included on the membership listing.
Individual memberships are just $15 and families may join for $25. Families are defined as parents and children living together where the oldest child is actively participating in schooling up to the college level. All membership fees are due upon joining and reoccurring membership fees will be collected at our annual New Years party. If not attending the New Years party fees can be mailed in to us by the published party date each year.
We are a not for profit organization and fees allow us to provide services and administration to our membership.
